AMD - 7xx Series Chipsets
Delivering the industry leading chipsets for AMD motherboards
AMD is a global semiconductor company known for high performance CPUs, GPUs, and system-on-chip solutions used across consumer, gaming, data center, and AI platforms. I joined AMD shortly after its acquisition of ATI Technologies, working from the Toronto and Markham offices as part of the former ATI organization. I was part of the chipset team responsible for foundational motherboard components used in desktop and notebook systems, initially managing the southbridge product line and later helping consolidate it into the Fusion Controller Hub. This work contributed to AMD’s broader transition toward tightly integrated system-on-chip designs that underpin its modern compute and graphics platforms.
After interning at ATI Technologies as a digital television hardware developer and at NVIDIA as a mobile software developer, I joined AMD full time. I began in a competitive analysis role as a product marketing engineer and later transitioned into product management, becoming the southbridge chipset product manager.
What is southbridge and northbridge?
Most people no longer hear terms like northbridge or southbridge, but the functions they represented are still fundamental to modern computers. Historically, the southbridge handled input and output such as USB devices and storage, while the northbridge managed high speed communication between the CPU, memory, and graphics. Today, these roles are no longer separate chips. In modern systems, including Apple Silicon MacBooks, the CPU, graphics, memory controller, and all former northbridge and southbridge functionality are integrated into a single system on a chip. The terminology has disappeared, but the architectural responsibilities remain.
My Contributions (2007 - 2014)
- Bridged technical and business worlds. Designed technologies with engineering and led matrix teams to execute and deliver highly complex semiconductor products
- Drove competitive analysis to identify feature and performance gaps and addressed the gaps through roadmap planning and prioritization
- Led cross-functional teams to develop unique and revolutionary graphics and system software projects (i.e. Dual Graphics, Mantle, SteamOS, RAIDXpert, Overdrive etc.)
- Led the integration of SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 into AMD chipsets, making AMD the industry leader in integrated chipsets (Hudson, Bolton)
- AMD Spot Light Award for launching the industry leading 780G chipset product
